Phoenix Under 15s continue to have a very decent run in to a long season with 2 wins and a defeat in the past week. It began on a disappointing note with a 4-1 loss to St. John Bosco in Drimnagh on Tuesday. Ironically the boys played some of their best creative football of the week and would not have been flattered to be 3 goals up after 20 minutes. However Bosco's took advantage of Phoenix not taking their chances and went in 2-1 up at half time, the Phoenix goal being a close in effort from Keith Kirwan. In the second half Phoenix just couldn't get back in to it and a 4-1 score line was a poor reflection of the lads' very honest efforts.
From there the results picked up. The long trip to Sallynoggin on Thursday resulted in a fully deserved 3-1 win over St. Joseph's Boys. After a scoreless first half, two good strikes from Kevin Lawlor and Sam Dwyer put Phoenix into cruising mode. Joeys pulled one back making it a nervous last ten minutes. The points were secured when great battling from James Scanlon on the left hand side set up a chance which Ben Forde calmly slotted home from close range.
The icing on the cake came on Sunday with a 5-1 win over Lucan United at Scribblestown. A goal from Sean Tynan, following an excellent assist by Simon McSweeney, gave Phoenix the lead at the break. The floodgates opened in the second half. First up was a fine goal from Mark Thornberry, raiding from the left back position and taking his time beating the defender before calmly slotting home. Sean Tynan then superbly finished for his 2nd goal following an excellent pass by James Scanlon. The boys were flying now and Aaron Staunton matched his strike partner with 2 very well taken goals. A small loss of concentration gave Lucan a late equaliser but that was the only small blot on a very good team performance.
With the Junior Cert looming for many of this team it looks like Tuesday's trip to Leicester Celtic will finish a campaign which has seen the Under 15s play consistently good football, sometimes without the end product which would have seen them challenging the very top of the table, but with the emphasis always on a good passing game. Final report from Leicester Celtic still to come, watch this space !'
